Singing as Theatre | El Canto y el Teatro

There are so many factors and elements of study and mastery that need to come together in an artist to be able to achieve success. This is not only with the art form (technical execution, literature and style), but equally with the delivery in the performance arena, be it in the “salon”, concert/recital hall or opera house. Once we have mastered the instrument and repertoire, the greater objective is communicating the character and its story, turning fantasy into an undeniable reality that transports an audience through a theatrical journey. We are story tellers, we are the vehicles of every character we bring to life.

From the very beginning of my serious studies of voice and opera, my voice teacher declared to me that 50% of the singer’s technique was the actor’s process. As I started to take on operatic roles, staged in full productions, the truth of that declaration resonated completely. And, that dichotomy became the foundation of my singing and preparation for the stage. This masterclass/workshop series is about exploring our responsibilities as a musician and as an actor, how to find the connection and balance between the two aspects so that we come to the stage as a fully technically enabled musician whose performance successfully communicates the character and its story to the audience.

Elements of discussion will be:

  • The Theatre, the Stage and what it demands of the artist.
  • What is the Actor’s process?
    • Assimilation of text, levels of memorization
    • Character development, discerning intention via the “given circumstances”
    • Dramatic evolution of a character and how to live it, including the physicality
    • Communicating the character’s truth
  • Singing from the actor’s perspective
    • From the character’s physical reality (posture, temperament, etc.)
    • Language
    • Melody as dramatic gesture
    • Discovering the music as an emotional extension of the character
  • Theatrical and Musical differences comparing the dramatic approaches of Verismo and Commedia del Arte as theatrical conventions and the singer’s reality.
